Performers gather for drama event

YORK'S 13th annual schools drama festival returns to the city this weekend with more than 500 young performers taking part.

Members of 21 primary, secondary schools and youth theatre groups come together tomorrow and Sunday to perform in York University's central hall. Some as young as five will be creating 10-minute performances based on this year's theme of "tall tales".

Councillor Nigel Ayre, executive member for leisure, culture and social inclusion, said he hoped the festival, co-ordinated by the Council's arts education team, would foster creative thought.

He said: "This festival is a great opportunity for those taking part to communicate with other young people and become inspired by the dramatic arts.

"The fact that the festival is returning for a 13th year highlights the success it has had in involving the young people of York in such programmes."
