Nathan Sumner, 35, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court accused of attempting to murder Pc Bates in the Gleadless area of the city on Wednesday evening.

Sumner, with an obvious injury to his left eye, entered the dock in handcuffs, and surrounded by seven police officers, some in body armour.

More officers were deployed in the court, outside the dock.

Sumner, of Plowright Close, Sheffield, was remanded in custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on May 13.

Pc Bates lost a finger when she was attacked with a hatchet after attending a domestic incident in Plowright Close. She also suffered a fractured skull and a broken leg.

South Yorkshire Police said she remains in hospital.

Police said she had responded to the initial incident with a male officer, who was also injured.

Three other officers also suffered injuries during attempts to arrest Sumner at a nearby Co-op store.

He was eventually detained after officers used batons and a Taser.

Local resident Simon Ellis, 46, has described how he witnessed the attack and then pulled the injured Pc Bates into his flat.

In court, Sumner spoke only to give his name, date of birth and address during the five-minute hearing.

Wearing a grey T-shirt, he acknowledged members of his family in court, some of whom were in tears.

His left eye was completely closed and he had a large dressing above it.

Sumner is charged with attempted murder, six counts of assault by beating, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of making threats to kill, affray, threatening a person with a blade in a public place and production of cannabis.

There was no application for bail from Andrew Dalrymple, defending.
