Pier blow as rusty bridge closed

Visitors to Whitby will no longer be able to walk to the end of the town’s historic piers after a corroded footbridge was shut yesterday over fears for public safety.

Scarborough Council has closed the bridge between the West Pier and the West Pier extension after an investigation revealed it had deteriorated beyond repair due to high winds and waves.

It comes as a further blow to the town as residents continue to wait for repairs to be completed on the cut-off east pier extension after funding was awarded by the Environment Agency in 2009.

A council spokesman said it planned to replace the old structure “as soon as possible”.
