Piracy in the eye department

Eye specialists hosted a "pirates and princesses" party to help children feel more confident about wearing an eye patch.

Shown are Tegan Barry, four, from Middleton, Leeds, specialist Danielle Guy and Ryan McMullen, three, from Bramley, in the eye department at St James's Hospital in Leeds where about 1,500 children a year are assessed and treated.

Many of the patients have a squint which requires a patch for several years on the better eye.

Senior specialist Laura Tuff, who came up with the party idea and got funding from manufacturer 3M, said: "We know that children sometimes struggle with having to wear an eye patch because it marks them out as different."
