Plans for new £15m concert venue unveiled

The Art Deco building may be run down but the campaign to save it has been backed by thousands of Bradfordians, including artist David Hockney who called it a “splendid building”.

When it opened in the 1930s it had one of the largest cinemas in the country, boasting 3,000 seats as well as a ballroom and a posh restaurant.

Later, when it became the Gaumont, it attracted big-name performers including The Beatles, Buddy Holly and The Rolling Stones.

Campaigners say a revamped Odeon would make an ideal backdrop to the new City Park.
