Plans to tackle market town traffic congestion unveiled

PLANS for long-awaited highways improvements to tackle congestion in one of North Yorkshire’s market towns are to be shown to the public.

The proposals were delayed last year amid concerns over the scheme to ease traffic queues and improve pedestrian and cycle access in Malton and the neighbouring town of Norton.

An exhibition will now be staged on Friday and Saturday as part of a public consultation which is running until April 18 on the revised plans.

The event will also provide details of a £5.6m scheme for the A64 Brambling Fields junction involving North Yorkshire County Council, Ryedale District Council and the Highways Agency.

The county council’s executive member for highways, Coun Gareth Dadd, said: “Improving traffic flow as well as air quality and conditions for pedestrians has long been a priority for the council and its district council partners.

“We will welcome views from residents and businesses during the consultation to ensure that Malton and Norton get the improvements that best meet the needs of the community as a whole.”

The consultation was originally planned for May last year but was delayed following concerns about draft proposals for Railway Street and Norton Road. Changes to Malton’s roads network are essential to ensure through traffic avoids the congested town centre by using the A64 and the improved Brambling Fields junction.

The exhibition will be in the Green Man Hotel on Malton’s Market Place from 1pm to 7.30pm on Friday and from 9am to 1pm on Saturday.
