Plans to help businesses who offer economic boost

Selby District Council is currently holding public talks over its plans to provide financial help for businesses who provide new employment opportunities in the district.

The council is considering whether to introduce a limited rate relief discount for local businesses to encourage economic growth and boost employment opportunities for residents.

It is hoped that the discount will attract new businesses to the area, support the expansion of existing ones and create new employment opportunities for residents in the district.

The executive member for finance and resources, Coun Cliff Lunn, said: “We want to make sure that we focus our help on the businesses that will create new economic growth within the district.

“We know that these are the things that matter the most to residents - housing, the local economy, employment and the local infrastructure, retail and leisure.

“This limited rates relief is a practical step we can take to support local businesses and offer real, tangible support to them.”

The consultation will also cover plans to introduce a monetary cap on the level of award per property per year.

Consultation on the policy is open until July 26. A copy of the draft policy document is available on the council’s website and comments can be submitted by email to [email protected] or in writing to the policy and strategy team at Selby District Council’s Civic Centre in Doncaster Road.

The outcome of the consultation will be considered by members of the local authority before a decision is taken and the findings will help inform a final decision to be made at a meeting on September 10.

If councillors approve the policy, it will be in place from next April.
