Plea for calm after murder suspect in court

The family of a young father from Leeds who was shot dead in his home has called on aggrieved friends not to take the law into their own hands.

Jordan Stapleton, 21, was killed in the bathroom of his flat on Beckhill Chase, Meanwood, on Tuesday, April 16, while his four-year-old son slept in a bedroom.

Nineteen-year-old Cyrus Hanley, of Miles Hill View, Potternewton, Leeds, appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with his murder.

After the brief hearing, Mr Stapleton’s sister, Selina Stapleton, 27, said justice should now be allowed to run its course.

She said: “What has happened is a tragedy and has left the whole family devastated.

“We don’t want any repercussions now. There’s no need for anyone to do anything stupid.

“Someone has been charged and we just want justice to be done through the courts.”

Mr Stapleton suffered a fatal chest injury when he was shot shortly before midnight on April 16. Police arrested eight people in total, but Mr Hanley is the only one who remains under suspicion.

Wearing a blue sweater and blue jogging bottoms, he spoke only to confirm his name during yesterday’s two-minute hearing before being remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown Court yesterday.
