The 84-year-old, who lives in Leeds, is reported to be recovering from a bout of pneumonia after being admitted on Saturday.

Sir Jimmy started his working life as a miner in his native Yorkshire before running a series of clubs and working as a wrestler and DJ.

He has raised millions for charity and for many years was a regular marathon runner in support of good causes.

Sir Jimmy is also known for his high fitness levels and his love for wearing tracksuits and distance running, although in recent years this has been reduced because of recurring bouts of gout.

Up until a year ago he reportedly ran six miles a day but reduced that to just a few a week.

Fourteen years ago he had a quadruple heart bypass operation after suffering chest pain caused by arteries blocked by cholesterol. When he was a coal miner he badly hurt his back in an underground explosion.

Earlier this year he revealed that as well as puffing on his trademark cigars he enjoyed a diet of cakes, biscuits and other foods not usually associated with a healthy lifestyle.
