Police bid to reduce road deaths

SOUTH Yorkshire Police is offering the public the chance to help reduce the number of road crashes during Road Safety Week.

This week members of the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, South Yorkshire Police and local councils will be speaking to members of the public at Morrisons stores across the county about the dangers and responsibilities of being a driver.

The public can try out a driving simulator, see the new interactive Subaru, test out a police breathalyser kit, or ask a police or fire officer any questions they may have about safety on the road including the correct use of mobile phones.

The partnership will be at the following Morrisons stores: Today – York Road, Doncaster; tomorrow – Lower Thomas Street, Barnsley; Thursday – Hillsborough, Sheffield; Friday – Parkgate, Rotherham.

Supt Eddie Murphy said: “In South Yorkshire last year there were 435 people killed and seriously injured on the roads of the county.

“As a Partnership we work proactively to reduce these figures further, however we can only do this with support from the public of South Yorkshire.”
