Police bring in ‘capture car’ with surveillance equipment to deter thieves

A new “capture car” fitted with surveillance technology has been deployed in Airedale and north Bradford in a bid to cut vehicle crime.

The technology is triggered when anyone tries to break in to the vehicle.

Detective Constable Matt Wilkinson, of Airedale and North Bradford CID, said: “The capture cars are used throughout the entire district and by using this tool we are continuing to have some significant success in reducing vehicle crime.

“It is a great asset, in that it can be moved around the area at any time, reacting to any trend in crime we may experience.

“Those who attack it will find themselves caught on camera, subsequently allowing us to trace those responsible. This all adds to the weight of evidence against any offender and the potential for them to face a custodial sentence.”

Between April 2012 and February 2013 there have been 85 fewer thefts from vehicles in the Airedale and North Bradford police division compared to the same period the previous year, but people are still being urged to ensure their vehicles are locked and valuables removed from sight.

DC Wilkinson said: “There have been instances where vehicles have been left insecure by the owners, leading to vehicles being broken into or stolen.

“Neighbourhood Policing Team officers have been working with residents in the Worth Valley area after a number of vehicles were identified as being insecure.”
