Police called in after rugby player critically injured

A RUGBY union player was critically ill in hospital today following an incident during a match in York.

North Yorkshire Police said detectives are investigating the incident which happened at the game between York Railway Institute and Doncaster Thornesians yesterday afternoon.

The injured man has been named as Tuui Redrava, 30, but police have given no further details about how he came to be injured.

A force spokeswoman said: "Police are investigating an incident during the York RI rugby home game against Doncaster Thornesians yesterday.

"At around 4pm an incident occurred a result of which a player received a serious injury and is critically ill in hospital.

"The injured player is named as 30-year-old Tuui Redrava.

"Spectators at the match are requested to contact York CID as soon as possible."

It is understood Mr Redrava was playing for the York RI side when he was injured during an on-field incident.

According to some reports this was an altercation which broke out just before half-time.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

York RI officials who were at the match said they did not want to comment during the police investigation.
