Police chase crash closes commuter route into Leeds

RUSH hour traffic into Leeds was severely disrupted this morning after a head-on collision on one of the city's busiest commuter routes, following a police chase.

A Vaxhall Corsa collided with a taxi on the A64 York Road city-bound carriageway just after 4.30am, outside the Dog and Gun pub.

Two people in the Corsa suffered serious injuries.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police started following a Vauxhall Corsa at 04.36am on the A64 York Road Leeds. This pursuit was abandoned when the Corsa drove the wrong way down the road. It was then involved in a head on collision with a taxi.

"The passenger and driver of the Corsa were taken to hospital with serious head and spinal injuries. The driver of the taxi suffered a broken leg.

"It is anticipated that there will be significant disruption on the road as enquiries into this continue and traffic diversions are currently in place."

The A64 York Road was closed westbound between Halton Dial and the Gipton Approach junction.

Drivers were diverted but there were tailbacks on the A6120 Ring Road Cross Gates junction and on the A63 Selby Road to the Hollyshaw Lane junction.
