Police chief wins longer contract

SIR Norman Bettison will continue in his role as the head of West Yorkshire Police until the end of 2014.

West Yorkshire Police Authority confirmed it has extended the Chief Constable's contract which was due to end in just over a year. Chairman Coun Mark Burns-Williamson said it was important the force had continuity of leadership and decision-making during the unprecedented challenges that lie ahead.

"The authority and I recognise that now, more than ever, it is vital we retain the expertise we have, to get through the challenging times ahead. 2011 is going to be a very difficult year for the staff and officers, we didn't want to add to that, speculation and uncertainty about the future of the chief constable, so we have agreed a three-year extension to his contract."

He added: "Sir Norman is the one of the most senior police officers in the UK today, he provides strong leadership, doesn't shirk from difficult choices and he is prepared to be accountable for them. Most important of all, he shares the police authority's commitment to neighbourhood policing; in short I believe he is the best person for the job over this next period."
