Police gun go-ahead nearly 20,000 times
Firearms were authorised on 19,951 police operations in 2008-09, new Home Office figures revealed yesterday.
The statistics for forces in England and Wales also show the number of operations involving armed-response vehicles increased by 7.4 per cent to 16,564.
During the same period, police opened fire on four occasions, down from seven in 2007-08.
