Police halt ‘Table Mountain’ blockade

residents have blockaded a road leading to a controversial waste tip in an attempt to stop lorries from going onto the site.

About 10 cars and up to 20 people blocked the concrete access road leading to the tip at Newport – branded the East Riding’s own “Table Mountain” – for around an hour. The protest ended when the police moved them on. It came days after residents agreed to pursue legal action for compensation.

The tip is over twice the height of the council-permitted limit.

Coun Paul Robinson said: “I think ultimately this started on Saturday at the public meeting when over 100 turned up and there was a clear desire to see something done.

“This was compounded on Monday morning when Newport residents received a newsletter from (operators) City Plant Ltd that was somewhat disingenuous, particularly about the number of vehicle movements which they said was 30, but in reality there are days when it is well over 100.”
