Police hunt youths who stoned trains

AN increase in incidents involving youths throwing stones and bricks at passing trains in Pudsey, Leeds, has prompted a police appeal.

British Transport Police officers are hunting youths who stoned two trains earlier this month.

Pc Barry Calvert, who is investigating, said: “The first incident was reported to us on Wednesday July 13 at 7.45pm when a group of youths were seen to be throwing stones and bricks at the passing 6.46pm Selby to Wakefield Westgate service.

“The stones ultimately damaged the train, leaving dents to the panelling.

“A further incident of stone throwing at a Huddersfield to Leeds service, within the same area was also reported on Monday July 18 at 8.25pm.”

The location of both incidents was the track close to Daleside Road.

Pc Calvert added: “We are conducting local inquiries into the incident and ask anyone with any information that could help our investigation, to come forward.

“We are particularly interested to speak to anyone who saw a group of six to eight Asian youths in the area, as the driver of the train reported seeing a group trespassing close to the railway off Daleside Road.

“The railway is not a playground and trespassing on the tracks and throwing stones at trains is not only dangerous but can have serious – and sometimes fatal – consequences.

It also causes significant delays to train services and we urge residents in the area to report anything untoward they see to a member of staff or a British Transport Police officer.

“We will not tolerate any form of anti-social or criminal behaviour and will not hesitate to take action against those responsible.”

BTP officers are increasing patrols in hotspot areas.
