Police launching proof of age cards

A pilot scheme has been launched in Selby for young people to prove their age when buying adult products – and help pub and club staff turn away underage drinkers carrying forged ID.

Selby District Community Safety Partnership has introduced the ID4U proof of age card. It is free to young people in Selby for the first year, and there are plans to roll out the scheme across North Yorkshire.

Only cards which carry the PASS (Proof of Age Standards Scheme) hologram are accepted by the Association of Chief Police Officers, the Home Office and the Trading Standards Institute.

Selby Community Safety Partnership support officers Pc John Gregson and Pc Andy Patchett have worked on the scheme to ensure the card has the necessary accreditation.

Pc Gregson said: "The scheme was first brought to the table a couple of years ago when we realised that pubs, clubs and other licensed premises needed a robust tool to help staff and door staff combat the fraudulent cards that were in circulation."

Pc Patchett said the scheme would help people who appeared younger than they are to buy things like video games. Application forms are available in police stations and libraries.
