Police name driver killed in Sheffield pile-up

POLICE have named the man who died in a four-vehicle collision in Sheffield yesterday morning.

Michael John Selwood, 47, was driving a black Audi A3 on the A61 Westwood New Road in the High Green area when it is believed a blue Vauxhall Astra, travelling in the same direction, collided with the car and forced it into oncoming traffic, where it was in a head-on collision with a blue Lexus RX.

A fourth car, a grey BMW that was following the Lexus towards Barnsley, was then in collision with the Astra which had spun into the opposite carriageway.

The Lexus driver, from Sheffield, suffered serious chest injuries and is detained in the city's Northern General Hospital.

The Astra driver, a 45-year-old woman from Sheffield, was arrested and questioned for causing death by dangerous driving. She has since been bailed until November, pending further enquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident or anyone who saw the cars being driven prior to the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2970.
