Police officer says she's sad to leave

West Yorkshire Police's longest serving female police officer has retired.

Inspector Milly Wheelwright, who has clocked up almost 37 years service, was based in the Calderdale division.

Her career has included working on high profile cases such as the Yorkshire Ripper inquiry in the late 1970s.

Insp Wheelwright said: "Although I am sad to leave the force, I feel it's time to move on.

"I could have retired after 30 years service but the very next day I was back doing the job I love. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the force, the people I have met and worked with."

Insp Wheelwright helped to set up the force's first witness care system for young people who were called to give evidence in court.

She was also instrumental in establishing summer school activity centres in Calderdale to help divert young people away from crime.

Superintendent Stan Bates, of the Calderdale division, said: "Milly is absolutely commendable. She has a real commitment to the job and was as enthusiastic on her last day as she was on her first. She will be sadly missed by the division."
