Police officers rescue pregnant woman stranded in the snow

TWO police officers struggled through waist-deep snow to rescue a pregnant woman in East Yorkshire stranded in her 4x4 car.

Medics said the 19-year-old woman - who suffered from a medical condition exasperated by the cold - "would have come to some harm" if she had not been rescued, Humberside Police said.

The unnamed woman, who is 16 weeks pregnant, was stuck in the Land Rover Discovery with two other people in deep snow near Pocklington, on Tuesday night.

Pc Neil Fraser and Pc Tony Harrison were in the area checking nearby roads for any vehicles having problems in the snow.

As they travelled along the Givendale Road towards the A166 it became clear that even in a police 4x4 vehicle they could not get over the top of the road due to the volume of snow.

In the distance they saw hazard warning lights flashing on a vehicle. They took the police car as far as they could, then set off on foot.

They struggled through waist-deep snow for at least half a mile to get to the car, Humberside Police said.

The pregnant teenager was said to be suffering from the cold having been there for some time.

The officers helped the three off the hill where they managed to get another police 4x4 car to take them to Pocklington Police Station.

Police said an ambulance was called but the pregnant woman did not require hospital treatment.

The two officers said in a statement: "We were just doing our job and we were just pleased we came across the car when we did."
