Police probe violent clashes between ‘Turkish gangs’

Trouble flared in the early hours of Tuesday in Scunthorpe and spread to another part of the town before a pitched battle took place on a street in Goole, which culminated with a man being run over by a car.

It is thought all the men involved were Turkish.

Officers were first called to an incident in Frodingham Road, Scunthorpe, and later attended another fight in Old Brumby Street, which police described as a “verbal and physical altercation” between a large number of men.

Then at about 2.33am there was another clash between a large group of men in Swinefleet Road, Goole, which resulted in damage to a takeaway.

Reports suggest the men attacked each other with weapons, and a car arrived on the scene, resulting in one man being run over and two others suffering leg injuries.

The vehicle then drove off at speed.

Police said a number of casualties were taken to hospitals in Scunthorpe, Goole and Doncaster, some with serious injuries.

A total of 15 arrests were made and more could follow, police said yesterday.

A Humberside Police spokeswoman said: “At present we believe this is an isolated incident involving a number of European men who are possibly known to each other. A team of officers are conducting localised enquiries in Scunthorpe and Goole, working to establish the exact circumstances of all three incidents.

“Anyone who may have information, involving large groups of individuals, seen in Scunthorpe and Goole in the early hours of the morning of Tuesday 14 February (is asked) to contact police.”

She also appealed for witnesses who saw a convoy of vehicle, including a Vauxhall Corsa, possibly travelling at speed towards Goole from Scunthorpe.
