Police staff member faces charges in scalding claim

A STAFF member at a Yorkshire police force has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm after hot liquid was allegedly poured over a man in custody.

Adrian Law, 44, a civilian employed by South Yorkshire Police as a detention officer, is due to appear before Leeds magistrates next Tuesday.

He was charged on Monday following an investigation into an alleged assault on a 26-year-old man at Barnsley police station on May 30 who suffered burns and blisters to his groin.

An investigation was carried out by South Yorkshire Police's own professional standards department under the direction of the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Last week, a separate IPCC investigation concluded the force made "serious mistakes" after it arrested a Rotherham man Dean Hutton, 23, who suffered brain damage when battered with a scaffolding pole, but was held for 11 hours before being treated as officers thought he was drunk.
