Police station re-opens to the public

A REFURBISHED police station in York opened to the public yesterday as part of a move in crime-fighting to bring officers back into the community.

A new front desk has been installed to give people the chance to report crimes and deal with officers in person for the first time in seven years at the station in Acomb.

The renovations mean that people do not have to travel to North Yorkshire Police's main station in York on Fulford Road.

Assistant chief constable Tim Madgwick, who officially opened the facilities yesterday , said: "With the help of our volunteers Acomb Police Station's new front-desk will bring the community, the police and other partners closer together.

"The volunteers will staff the office which will allow our officers to be out on the streets doing their job."

The scheme is part of a strategy to build closer links between the North Yorkshire force and the community.

Although the Acomb office will only be open for two hours a day in April, while the volunteers are trained, the opening hours will then increase to meet local demand.
