The Humberside Police and Crime Panel has backed police and crime commissioner Keith Hunter’s proposal of a 1.99 per cent rise, equivalent to a £3.66 per year for a Band D household - or 1p a day. The council tax part of the bill looks set to rise by 4.99 per cent.

Last month Graham Stuart MP expressed concern after figures showed a 13 per cent rise in crime in Hull and the East Riding.

Financial reserves have been used by Mr Hunter to pay for 50 extra officers.

But he said the precept would go only part way to filling the financial hole left by Government cuts. He said: “Like most of you, I want to see more visible policing on our streets, more officers on the beat.”
