Call to cut councillor numbers

THE number of Doncaster councillors should be cut by a third to make the authority more effective, according to the Government commissioners monitoring the council.

The commissioners, sent in to the council by Ministers in 2010 after a damning report, have also suggested all councillors should be elected at the same time as the executive mayor, every four years.

The recommendation to reduce councillor numbers from 63 to 40 has been made to the Local Government Boundary Commission which is conducting a review of the size of the council and new ward boundaries.

The council is expected to put forward its own ideas to the Commission next month.
