Speaking to The Yorkshire Post at the party’s conference in Bournemouth he said that while he will commit to his Sheffield Hallam MP constituency during the 2017 EU referendum, he suggested he hadn’t made firm plans beyond that point.

On standing in a fourth General Election, the former Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the party, said: “I don’t know, I will take each Parliament at a time.”

Then added: “But I’m certainly not going to disappear in a puff of smoke.”

Despite a crushing defeat in May which saw the end of the party in Government and Mr Clegg’s resignation as leader he said he wants to continue being an MP into 2017 and play a part in the party’s campaign to stay within the EU.

However he is keen to remain out of the ‘media glare’ and not lead on the issue.

He said: “I’m absolutely not the face of the campaign.

“I have no ambition other than to play ‘a role’, to be useful, to make the case which is simply not being made by either the Labour or the Conservative parties at the moment.”
