Do without town hall boss suggests union

Deputy chief executive at Hull Council Adrienne Kelbie has been appointed chief executive of the Disclosure and Barring Service, which replaces the Criminal Records Bureau.

Adrian Kennett, Unison branch secretary at Hull Council, said the post, which carries a salary of £123,000, should be scrapped.

Last year nearly 1000 posts were axed at the council.

He said: “I think there’s enough management on very high salaries within the organisation for her work to be picked up. There are lots of strategic people in there – they should start turning their strategic minds to something else.”

Councillors next week will be discussing a review of senior management. It follows Labour pledges to cut senior officers’ pay as part of efforts to save £3m. More than 80 managers at the council earn more than £50,000 each a year.

It is believed management will recommend cutting one post, but some councillors want to go further. Deputy council leader Daren Hale said: “Members are looking at proposals to reduce staff at senior level starting at corporate director level and working down and these will be considered next week.

“Obviously this latest development will be fed into the process to see if there is an opportunity to make additional savings.”
