'˜Double standards' claim over allowances

Hundreds of staff could lose almost £1,000 in car allowances while top bosses including the chief executive will keep theirs, unions claimed yesterday.

UNISON, GMB and Unite have called upon East Riding Council to return to the negotiating table over the proposals.

The allowance is paid to employees to cover the costs of using their own car for work.

Unions say while the council is looking to scrap the allowances it wants to protect “cash emoluments” which range from £3,885 for heads of service to £6,501 for chief executive Nigel Pearson.

Area organiser Joe Gibbins said: “As far as the trade union is concerned 51 people sharing emoluments of just under £250,000 would be the first port of call for savings - instead of attacking people - mental health workers and special needs assistants - who work on the front line with some of the most vulnerable people in the community.”

However the council said they wanted to replace current mileage rates with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs rates to help make savings. The proposals are due to go to full council next Thursday.
