Educators go on strike in pensions row

Thousands of teachers and lecturers staged a fresh strike yesterday in the bitter row over the Government’s controversial public sector pension reforms, closing schools and disrupting lectures.

The action by members of the National Union of Teachers and University and College Union in London hit more than 60 higher and further education institutions as well as a number of schools.

Parents were forced to make childcare arrangements or work from home because of the strike, which activists warned could be followed by further nationwide stoppages in the coming months.

Around 6,500 union members marched through central London and held a noisy rally outside the headquarters of the Education Department, chanting: “We won’t work till 68”, in reference to the increased retirement age they face.
