HARROGATE District council

Parks and leisure activities will bear the brunt of budget cuts as Harrogate Council slashes spending by £1.7m this year.

The authority will reduce the number of flower beds in the town and only recruit seasonal park keepers in the future, while leisure centres will lose activities and creche services. But councillor for finance Alan Skidmore insisted residents and visitors would notice little difference around the town and said the council has protected grants to charities such as the CAB.

The council’s most controversial budget proposals – to introduce charges for disabled parking and close public toilets – have been dropped, but around a third of the jobs will go at the town’s conference centre.
