Hull a '˜serious contender for C4'

Hull last night confirmed it was launching a bid to host Channel 4.

Hull City Council leader Steve Brady said as City Culture, Hull had surpassed expectations and ‘smashed some tired preconceptions’. He said Hull was a ‘serious contender’ to become Channel 4’s new home. It follows news that Leeds and Sheffield had lodged bids to host all or part of the Channel 4 business.

The Government has been told moving part of the broadcaster’s digital arm and some of the responsbility for commissioning programmes to the city would ensure television better represents the North. A bid to be the new home for parts of Channel 4 has been submitted by Leeds and its neighbours, a group known as the Leeds City Region.

Sheffield reckons it would be worth £1bn for the city. Creative Sheffield, Sheffield Council’s economic development team, is leading Sheffield’s bid and said a growth forecast based on inward investment with the belief that more media companies would want to move to Sheffield to be closer to C4 commissioners.
