Jenkyns calls for Conservative unity

THE co-ordinator of Vote Leave's Yorkshire campaign tonight called for Conservative unity in the wake of a referendum campaign that has split the party down the middle.

Morley and Outwood MP Andrea Jenkyns joined a chorus of Conservative voices insisting the party would reconcile as the referendum votes were counted.

She said: “Whatever the result, my Conservative colleagues and I are united in doing what's best for the country. We spent 18 years getting back in to majority Government. Now is the time to press on and govern for the good of everyone across Britain.

“With a weak opposition that would be disastrous for Britain, we will continue to deliver our manifesto, like we did with this referendum.”

As the polls closed at 10pm on Thursday night, a letter emerged signed by 84 pro-Leave Tory MPs backing David Cameron to remain prime minister regardless of the referendum result.

The letter said: "We believe whatever the British people decide you have both a mandate and a duty to continue leading the nation implementing our policies."
