Candidates have until Friday to register their interest although the party has confirmed it will continue with its policy of having an all woman shortlist for the seat.

A panel made up of NEC members will interview the shortlisted candidates on Monday and make their decision.

The move comes after the surprise decision of Amina Ali to step down as the party’s candidate just days after selection.

Ms Ali said she had taken the decision for family reasons.

Labour lost the seat to Respect’s George Galloway in a by-election in 2012.
