Mr Cuts gets set to leave civil service

The senior civil servant who has led the Whitehall cost-cutting drive is to leave the Government next month.

Ian Watmore, who was put in charge of finding billions of pounds of efficiency savings soon after the coalition was formed in 2010, will quit the civil service at the end of June.

His departure will come six months after he took up the additional role of permanent secretary – the top civil servant – at the Cabinet Office in January.

A former head of Tony Blair’s Number 10 Delivery Unit, Mr Watmore was recruited back to the civil service in June 2010 after a spell as boss of the Football Association.

As chief operating officer of the Cabinet Office’s Efficiency and Reform Group (ERG), he oversaw efforts to tackle waste and improve procurement by Whitehall departments.
