The party’s latest election plans for Yorkshire would focus its efforts on Bradford East, Harrogate and Knaresborough, Hull North, Hull West and Hessle and York Outer.

Yorkshire seats already accounts for almost a quarter of the Lib Dem’s current Commons presence through Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg.

Bradford East was among the seats lost by the Lib Dems as they suffered huge losses at the last General Election.

The Lib Dems took Harrogate and Knaresborough from the Conservatives in 1997 and held onto it until 2010.

The party came second in York Outer when it was first contested in 2010 and have enjoyed second places in the Hull seats.

It has also enjoyed spells running the councils in both citiesrelatively recently.

The Lib Dems would hope to capitalise on pro-European sentiment in Harrogate and York which, alongside Leeds, were the only parts of Yorkshire to back staying in the EU.

The Lib Dems’ battle plan has surfaced as the party gathers in York for its spring conference.

Council by-election results, including wins from Labour in Sheffield and Rotherham, and the Richmond Park by-election triumph have buoyed the party as it tries to claw back the ground lost in 2015.

The Lib Dems have also enjoyed a rise in membership to its highest level since 2012, fuelled largely by Remain voters angered at the EU referendum result.

Party sources claim they are also picking up Labour supporters disgruntled by the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.

Prisons, faith schools and nuclear weapons will be among the issues discussed at the conference.
