Tribunals on way at cost-cuts council
UNION leaders yesterday said they were preparing to launch more than 1,000 employment tribunal cases against a Yorkshire council over changes to staff terms and conditions. Doncaster Council has drawn up plans to reduce pay by up to 2.5 per cent and remove some benefits in an attempt to meet Government-imposed cuts.
But Jim Board, from public sector Unison, said the authority had “relied on fear and confusion to force members to accept” and said its action had been unlawful.
He said tribunal proceedings would now begin in the cases of around 1,300 employees who had refused to sign up.
The authority’s chief executive Jo Miller said she was confident that the council and its officers had acted properly, but added the matter would be referred to external legal advisers.
