UKIP sets out ambitions for
spa town

BRINGING in the private sector to run the Harrogate International Centre and scrapping the district council’s relocation plans are among the UK Independence Party proposals going into May’s elections.

UKIP is also promising to take control over highways from North Yorkshire County Council and reduce the number of new homes planned for the district.

The party secured a seat in Harrogate in last year’s county council elections and is hoping to repeat the feat at this year’s district poll.

County councillor David Simister said: “We are setting out our stall well ahead of Mays’ election with a raft of policies aimed at supporting local businesses, saving the tax payer money and preserving the character of the district.

“The international centre is losing money hand over fist and this can’t be allowed to continue. It must be put into the hands of the private sector and divorced from council interference.”

A third of Harrogate Council’s seats will be contested in May. The Conservatives currently hold the council with a majority of 10.
