York leading the way in the North for green travel after expanding e-scooter scheme

The City of York aims to be a flagship for the North when it comes to green travel, and lead the way for cities such as Leeds and Sheffield to follow, after expanding its electric scooter initiative.

There are now 250 e-scooters in use across York as part of a year-long e-scooter trial rolled out by leading operator TIER.

For the Department for Transport-approved scheme renting an e-scooter in the city costs riders £1 to unlock the vehicle and 15p per minute travelled.

Andy D’Agorne, Executive Member for Transport at City of York Council, said: "York’s electric vehicle landscape is developing quickly ,and we are pleased to see that the variety of transport modes available is widening choice for residents to get around sustainably.

“This trial is a great opportunity to explore how e-bikes can add to the mix of sustainable transport options in York, whilst helping to improve air quality and expand our electric vehicle offer.

"We are working closely with TIER to ensure that this new mode of sustainable travel fits the needs of our residents and visitors as we work together to create a greener, cleaner city."

Since the launch in October last year e-scooters in York have been used by more than 6,500 people with 40 parking bays allocated across the city.

The launch of the e-scooters are part of a raft of measures being put in place in the City of York to tackle pollution and improve air quality.

York’s clean air zone, which is also the UK’s only voluntary zone, rolled out in January this year while the city has also bid to become the UK’s first all electric bus city.

York Outer MP Julian Sturdy, added: "As they expand their fleet and coverage of our city, TIER is helping to improve connectivity across York and offering residents more choice about how they travel. I couldn't recommend more giving their e-scooters and e-bikes a go, as a fantastic green alternative to the car."
