Yorkshire to be ”hit hard” by spending cuts says TUC boss

Government spending cuts were likely to cause more job losses in areas such as Yorkshire, raising the prospect that the region will miss out on the labour market recovery, the TUC warned today.

General secretary Brendan Barber will visit the area as part of the union organisation’s campaign to promote an alternative to the “deep and rapid” cuts.

Yorkshire is being hit hard by the Government’s spending cuts, whatever Westminster-based politicians may claim. The region was one of the hardest hit during the recession and is struggling to create enough new jobs during our so-called recovery.

“The Government’s deep and rapid spending cuts will only make matters worse. They are already weakening business and consumer confidence and they will also dampen demand in the local economy,” he said.
