Yorkshire drivers to receive '˜inconsiderate parking' tickets

Traffic wardens in Scarborough could soon be handing out a new kind of ticket

DRIVERS in a Yorkshire town will now find a ticket on the windscreen even when they have not broken parking rules.

Scarborough Council is giving its traffic wardens the power to issue tickets when they see examples of inconsiderate parking in a trial supported by the police.

Unlike parking tickets, the ‘considerate parking notices’ will not carry fines but will encourage drivers to think about where they leave their vehicles.

However, the council has said it could issue penalty charges to “persistent offenders”.

If successful, the scheme could be rolled out across North Yorkshire.

Coun Andrew Backhouse, Scarborough Council’s cabinet member for parking, said: “We recognise the need in our borough to retain valuable parking space where possible and go as far as we can in tackling public concerns about anti-social parking.

“By highlighting the issues and asking motorists to be more considerate, we hope the need for further regulation and enforcement can be avoided.”

The idea is based on a similar scheme trialled by a council in Essex.
