Poloice arrest 108 in Christmas drink-drive purge

POLICE have carried out 4,000 breath tests and arrested 108 people during a festive season crackdown in North Yorkshire on drink drivers.

Special fast-track courts were put in place in partnership with the Crown Prosecution Service to ban the law-breakers.

Of the 108 arrests, 86 were for providing a positive breath test at the roadside.

Six people were arrested for failing to provide a roadside breath test and seven people were arrested for driving while unfit through drink.

Three people were arrested for being drunk in charge of a vehicle and six arrests were made for being unfit through drugs.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Madgwick of North Yorkshire Police, said: "Our commitment to road safety is intensifying and we will not tolerate people driving while under the influence of drink and drugs.

"As a result we have tested and arrested more people this year than we did during last year's campaign, which means there are more potential killers off our roads.

"This year we also introduced the fast-track court system which has proved to be very effective in dealing with offenders quickly, and hopefully that will serve as a warning to others thinking of getting behind the wheel when under the influence."
