Porno link on housing proposal website

DEVELOPERS behind controversial plans for a 700-home housing scheme in a Yorkshire city have apologised after a website link to showcase the plans directed internet users to a porn site.

Directors at Persimmon Homes have blamed technical problems after the link for the Germany Beck development, earmarked for the outskirts of York, re-directed residents to the site containing explicit images and phone sex services.

The plans have already sparked widespread controversy as academics and historians claim the homes will be built on the site of an ancient battlefield.

A Persimmon Homes spokeswoman stressed the internet link had been sent to the 31 members of the Germany Beck Community Forum, and not the wider public.

The managing director at Persimmon Homes in Yorkshire, Andrew Bowes, added: “Regrettably, the web link to the Germany Beck website included on the flyer became corrupted and diverted the user to another website.

“The matter was corrected as soon as it became apparent and an apology has since been issued to the members of the forum.”

A public consultation on the proposed development had been due to finish on December 30, although the deadline for comments has been extended until Sunday.

The 700-home scheme provoked an outcry amid claims it is earmarked for the site of the Battle of Fulford in 1066.

The invading Viking army, led by Harald Hardrada, triumphed over the English forces and the victory is seen as crucial in the run-up to the Battle of Hastings and William the Conqueror ultimately being crowned King of England.

Historians have attempted to pinpoint the location of the battlefield as campaigners tried to halt the development.

But outline planning permission for the housing scheme was granted in 2007 after a public inquiry. A full planning application is due to be submitted by Persimmon Homes to York Council later this year.
