Premiership footballer in nightclub assault claim

Manchester City footballer Michael Johnson is under investigation after allegedly butting a fan of rivals United in a nightclub, police said yesterday.

The fracas erupted after the alleged victim was singing Manchester United songs with friends in the club, 42nd Street, in the city centre.

Johnson, 22, tipped as a future Premiership star and who has represented England under 19s and under 21s, was arrested later and interviewed by police. He is currently on bail.

The alleged victim, 22, is understood to have flagged down a passing police patrol in the early hours of December 6 last year.

Johnson was later approached by police and an appointment was made for him to attend a police station to be questioned over the incident.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm and has been bailed until April 14.

The player has been dogged by injury in the last two seasons and is currently out of action after rupturing his knee ligaments.
