Prescott makes Labour long list for police chief

LORD Prescott has made it onto the long list of candidates for Labour’s nomination for the new police commissioner in the Humberside Police area.

The former Deputy Prime Minister will now be interviewed by the Party’s National Executive Committee alongside retired Chief Supt Keith Hunter for the £75,000-a-year role before a short list is decided next month.

Mr Hunter said: “I’ve had a lot of support from around the region and I hope they may take account of that.”

There is only one female candidate for the post, Alene Branton, also a former chairman of the police authority. It is not known whether she or the fourth Labour candidate, former Brigg and Goole MP Ian Cawsey, are on the long list. Former police authority chairman and Hull Lord Mayor Colin Inglis was told he had failed to make the long list last week.
