‘Prestigious’ honour for musician Bill Nelson

Bill Nelson, who grew up in Wakefield and attended Wakefield College of Art, received his Wakefield Star at a ceremony at Unity Works, the £4m refurbished arts venue formerly known as Unity Hall.

Mr Nelson, who performed at the venue in the 60s, is best known as the frontman for 70s band Be-Bop Deluxe, and has recorded more than 100 records.

Mr Nelson, who now lives near York, said he was “shocked and stunned” when he heard he was to receive a star. Just 12 others have been made so far, recognising those who have achieved success in sport, culture, science or engineering.

“I didn’t expect it,” Mr Nelson said. “Some of my fans had been writing about nominating me on my website, and I did my best to discourage them, and never thought it would happen. I’m not one for a lot of fuss.

“I believe it is going to be put near The Hepworth when Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore’s stars are, so quite prestigious.”
