Primary pupils fly high with a look into history at air museum event

MORE than 300 primary pupils learned about the Dunkirk Spirit yesterday during an action-packed day of Second World War and aviation events at the Yorkshire Air Museum.

Children, aged seven to 11, from nine schools in York and North Yorkshire took part in the Flightpath Show, being held for the fifth year running at at Elvington, near York. There were living history actors to tell the story of the miracle of the 1940 British evacuation, and 22 historical workshops.

Many students and teachers were in period costume.

A highlight of the day was a flypast by a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to mark both the 70th Anniversary of Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain. The event was organised by the museum with the North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP) which promotes high quality learning partnerships with businesses and other organisations. NYBEP adviser Wendy Taylor said: "We are thrilled with the fantastic contribution of partners from business and the local community who are bringing the curriculum alive."

Primary schools involved were Overdale, Appleton Roebuck, Sheriff Hutton, Aspin Park, Slingsby CP, The Dales School, Osbaldwick, Sand Hutton CE and Kirby Fleetham CE.
