Prince takes lunchtime break to listen to town’s teenagers

THE Duke of York visited South Yorkshire yesterday and stopped off to have lunch with some of Doncaster’s high-flying teenagers.

The event was organised at the town’s Mansion House, and Prince Andrew, who had earlier visited businesses in the county, was welcomed by civic mayor Coun Eva Hughes.

He met Leah Wren, a local youth councillor and Doncaster’s representative at the UK Youth Parliament.

The 17-year-old told the Duke about her volunteer work in the community and her role in last week’s Local Democracy Week which saw her out every night meeting other young people, explaining what a youth councillor does.

The Duke also chatted with Lewis Fitzpatrick, one of the top apprentices at the council.

The 19-year-old, who attends college while working for the council, is an apprentice in the authority’s heating and ventilation team.

Speaking before yesterday’s event he said he was a “bit nervous” but looking forward to meeting the royal visitor and telling him about his job and studies.

Coun Hughes said: “Doncaster has some very talented young people and it is great for them to have the chance to discuss their achievements and their priorities with Prince Andrew.”
