Princes become City boys for charity and set £21bn record

The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry cracked jokes as they made a record-breaking multibillion-pound deal for charity on a City trading floor.

As the brothers brokered a huge E25bn (£21bn) trade they bantered with one another, and Harry ribbed William for being preoccupied with “baby chat”.

The Princes were at brokerage firm BGC Partners in London to raise money in memory of the victims of the attacks on New York’s Twin Towers on September 11 2001.

Harry remarked about his brother: “He’s on the phone and it’s all baby chat.”

He then turned to William and said: “Stop flirting, get on with it!”

BGC lost 658 employees in the World Trade Centre attack, and its annual Charity Day has so far raised more than $89m.

All profits are donated to good causes, including William’s SkillForce and Harry’s WellChild organisations.

The Princes each made a handful of high-value deals and at one point William remarked: “Bloody hell, was that a billion?”

Their last deal, for E25bn, was a world record for a forward foreign exchange.

BGC broker Nick Thompson, 45, from Otley, West Yorkshire, mentored Harry through the deal.

He said: “He was great.

“He’s very laid back about it. He did very well.

“Prince Harry was far more confident. Prince William was too busy with the baby chat, rather than the numbers.”

After the deal was struck, William remarked: “I’m much better at helicopters.”

Celebrities also helping out on the trading floor included Yorkshire-born actor Sean Bean, who said: “I don’t know what I’m doing but I think I’m raising money.”
