Property sale nets thousands for councils

REDUNDANT council properties, including a former town hall building, have been sold at auction by two local authorities in Yorkshire and made more than £650,000.

Calderdale Council sold the former Brighouse Town Hall, in Thornton Square. It made £136,000 after going under the hammer to buyer Amjid Hussain, who plans to give half the space to his nephew.

Wakefield Council also raised £536,000 from the sale of three properties which had become surplus to its needs.

A total of 94 lots featured in the two-day sale, and 74 were sold.
